Report on KLA/MPLA Conference

I want to thank PALS for the $50 grant which helped pay my registration for the KLA/MPLA conference. I was able to attend all three days. I was really impressed with the number and variety of sessions at this year's conference.

One session I attended was Shift + WeED = SHED by Pamela Blome & Christine Baker from Arthur Lakes Library at Colorado School of Mines. They undertook a major weeding/ collection shifting project. They gave good examples of the ways they organized and planned the project. The document sharing template idea would work for a variety of projects.

Since we have started an archive I was interested in the Small Projects --Big Rewards: Digitization 101 session. Hays Public Library gave great details about their process and specific recommendations for scanning, firms and software. I especially was interested in Greenstone Digital which is freeware that enables you to put your digital images online.

Ottawa University is beginning to think about building a new library. With that in mind I attended How Good Signs Can Help You and Your Patrons and Go Green!. Rebecca Barham from the University of North Texas gave very clear explanations of the process they used to define their signage needs and how they designed them. Again the presenter recommended a vendor that had met their needs. The new Laramie County Library building in Cheyenne, Wyoming, is a LEED certified building. Ms. Osborn explained the process and provided references to resources.

I loved the speakers. I laugh when I remember the question "Why were so many Civil War battles fought in national parks?" I ate so much at the State Librarian's lunch that I didn't have room for the free ice cream in the exhibit area that afternoon. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with other librarians. Seeing the Keeper of the Plains lit up made me want to come back some day to walk along the river. And I won some children's books that my grandchildren will enjoy. Thank you for helping me have this experience.
